The article's author seems to be surprised that many people who mention 'embedded Linux' really mean the 'embedded Linux kernel'. I don't find it surprising though: Linux *is* only the kernel.
The discussion of adjective vs noun is moot: Linux is a noun. 'Embedded Linux' is the same as 'Embedded Linux kernel', and is the basis for embedded systems.
