Linux runs fine on any Power PC, with just about any amount of RAM. OS X runs acceptably on G4s with at least 512 or better- emphasis on the "or better" part, in my experience. If I have an old 7300 lying around, it's much better off as a Debian router and web server than it is trying to shove OS X onto it (which CAN be done, but the results are pretty discouraging). Not only that, you can get an old 603/604 PPC that'll run linux for around fifty bucks on ebay- with ethernet, video, etceteras already there- which is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new machine from the Apple Store.

Then there's little things, like setting up a DHCP server, sane SMB sharing, apt, etceteras. And let's not forget screen or command line IRC. The spare iMac in my work area had an inch of dust on it until I flipped it over to linux- the machine was literally useless with OS X.

It's all about the right tool for the job- if you're on a budget, linux solves any need you may have for a server easily and cheaply, and it runs on dirt. I have a bit of experience with this- something several of the persons tapped for this article seem to be sorely lacking.

Err... Mac OS X comes with screen by default. And you shouldn't have any trouble compiling BitchX or other similar irc clients under Mac OS X.

Mac OS X 10.2.6 runs just fine on my 400 MHz G3 machines.
