I was involved with an Open Source game program, and your comment "We don't know of a good, free, powerful modeler" rings so true. We eventually used LightWave under Windows for graphics.
There was a lot of pressure to use an open modeller, but we just couldn't find one that was usable. Some developers are still interested in working on a good, free, powerful Linux-based 3D modeling program; can anyone suggest an open source project that has a feasible chance of producing one?

this is the only tool that me, as a profan, was ever able to use. complex at the beginning (u need to learn keyb shortcut) but really fast and easy to use after some training.
