This approach is indeed common sense; it's simple and thoroughly intuitive. From a quick and dirty start, with no need to worry over categorizing 'errors', the result is successively refinable to an arbitrary degree. But I think the greatest power of the more bottom-up approach is that it allows for customized classifications. By assigning low-level 'topics' (substitute keywords or attributes for 'topics') to items rather than assigning items to pre-established mid-level or high level topics, arbitrary logic can be applied to organize the resulting knowledge base into views that are suitable for various times and purposes. (For example, the visualization function in the article.) Individual 'views' could be merged and pruned to suit interest groups and collaborators. |
