Speaking for myself, I use the popular 'LAMP' combination with a sprinkling of Perl thrown in for good measure. Big deal, so do lots of others :-)
The thing that I think sets me apart is that I am able to design some truly innovative software that I can build, demo and deploy for practically nothing. If I wanted to do it in VB (which I am also proficient in) or some other commercial software, the software /and/ hardware costs would be prohibitive, so I don't do it.
Free software has let my creativity flow largely unhindered, and I have tried to give back in kind to the community when I can. I'm happy.
